'I hope you're not the type to go running to the bathroom crying': Reasons applicants left a job offer on the table

A job offer doesn't always feel like something to be grateful for.

The interview process is as much about whether the company fits the candidate as it is the other way around, and this is something that many workplaces fail at. Whether they have bad business practices or tyrannical management, it is quite possible for somebody who would be perfect for the role to be put off by what they see after they apply.

It isn't always easy to walk away from a job offer, especially when you have been searching for work for a long time. However, there can be scenarios where this feels like the only viable option. Many companies fall into the trap of thinking that any applicant will be so grateful for the opportunity that they will ignore any bad behavior after an offer is given to them. This could not be further from the truth.

While the reasons for turning down a job can fall into a few familiar categories, sometimes people have reasons that might not immediately come to mind. It is good to take stock of these and remember that, as a potential employee, you are entitled to say what does and doesn't work for you. If your needs are truly going to be appreciated, a company should listen.

When people were asked why they had decided to leave a job offer on the table, they had all kinds of different responses. Every single one experienced something that left them feeling not quite right. Sometimes, they had the good fortune to be able to accept a better offer, but there were plenty of cases where it just seemed like the vibes were off. Although some may argue that we can't afford to be fussy when looking for a job, there are instances where that saves a person from added misery. It can be better to quit while you're ahead.
